Data is the building block for smart cities. So how do we make data more meaningful to citizens and improve life in cities? Together with Open Data BCN, the Barcelona City Council Data Office, we organised World Data Viz Challenge 2019 Barcelona – Kobe.

As an initiative propelled by the City Councils of Barcelona and Kobe, twinned for more than 25 years, the challenge aims to encourage citizens to contribute to improving different aspects of the city by analysing and visualizing data. It took place at the same time in both cities and final projects were presented during Smart City Expo World Congress.
Canela had a crucial role in the organisation of the Challenge acting as a point of reference for all the matters related to strategic counselling, planning and coordination of the Barcelona City Council teams involved in this project, from the Open Data BCN members to communications and international relations department.

Additionally, Canela was in charge of creating a brand new visual identity for the challenge as well as content for the web, social media and other communication materials such as media alerts and newsletters.
The agency provided on-site support during the final event, where the finalists (12 in total) presented their dataviz. Representatives from the city councils of Barcelona and Kobe, Consul of Japan in Barcelona and judges who assessed dataviz attended the event.
