23 February 2023, By Dianne Vegas, Head of Consumer

A new edition of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has arrived with great expectations after the pandemic. Whether you’re going to attend or not, here at Canela Dianne Vegas, our Head of Consumer Technology,  will tell you the most important things that will be presented, seen and debated at MWC 2023.

When is MWC 2023 and who will participate?

This year’s edition of the Mobile World Congress will take place from Monday 27th  February to Thursday 2nd  March at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue, located halfway between the city and the airport. Although the official inauguration of MWC 2023 will take place on Sunday night, numerous industry events will be held throughout the weekend.

Now that pandemic restrictions (especially in China) are behind us, the event aims to bring together around 80,000 participants, including both the congress, the accompanying trade fair, and parallel events. The 2,000 participating companies include the major technology and internet companies (Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Samsung…), leading telecommunications operators (Telefónica, NTT, Orange, etc.), and other companies from different sectors, such as Cradlepoint, Palo Alto Networks, or Deel, who would want to miss out on this huge global showcase?

What will be discussed and who will be present?

The extensive agenda of the MWC highlights five major themes, which will be addressed in different sessions by a large representation of top executives from the main companies in the sector. This year, no “star” guest has been announced, but the big names in the tech world will be present in the parallel events and sessions.

Firstly, the acceleration of the introduction of 5G will be discussed, which has become a commercial reality that is driving the telecommunications market. At the same time, the first key aspects of the next mobile network, 6G, will be addressed. Reality+, which encompasses everything from the metaverse to artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and Web 3.0, will also have a prominent role.

This edition of the MWC 2023 aims to give special emphasis to the promotion of open connectivity standards in areas such as IoT or edge computing, which are essential to make the networks of the future a reality.

Once again, fintechs will have a prominent presence at the Mobile World Congress, especially those related to the NFT economy and cryptocurrencies. At the end of the event, a significant portion of the presentations will be dedicated to digital transformation, from Industry 4.0 to electric and autonomous mobility, and telemedicine.

What's new at MWC 2023?

Although in recent years the main mobile phone manufacturers have chosen to launch their new products at their own events, the Mobile World Congress 2023 will be, in many cases, the first opportunity to see and test the latest additions to their lineups.

Among the highlights of MWC 2023, we will be able to get a first-hand look at new models from Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei, Honor, OPPO, and more. We will be able to see smartphones with larger battery capacity and more powerful processors. Special mention goes to foldable phones, which are gradually being incorporated into the lineups of major manufacturers.

What are the parallel events of MWC 2023?

In addition to the technological fair spread across 8 pavilions, MWC 2023 has this year spaces dedicated to Industry, Digital Planet and Entertainment. There is also an area called “Journey to the future”, where visitors can experience all kinds of technological solutions designed to address social problems.

In parallel with MWC 2023, a new edition of 4YFN, the event dedicated to the world of entrepreneurship where investors and startups meet to promote innovative business ideas, will be held. Finally, in addition to national exhibitors with their own stands, is organizing a Spanish Pavilion at MWC 2023, where 38 companies will present their proposals in areas such as geolocation, Smart Cities, and Blockchain.
