2016 has been a very special year for Canela: we celebrated our 10th anniversary, we got 20 new clients, we expanded our team to 21 executives, we moved into new offices in Madrid and Lisbon and we received 4 Sabre Awards nominations. It’s also been a year of unforgettable campaigns for our clients and some surprises… Here’s a quick recap.
2016: An unforgettable year for Canela PR
In January, with our turrones and turkey still half-digested, we took out our crystal ball to predict five PR trends to look out for in 2016. Seems we got it right because these five topics balkanization of the media; social media as source of information; the maturity of the content marketing; Big data in the PR sector; and PR in real-time have created a lot of buzz this year. Let´s see if we can get it right again in 2017.
Our crystal ball gazing didn´t last long because in February the most important event of the year for some of our clients came on to the horizon: Mobile World Congress 2016, the biggest mobile technology fair in the world. In addition to summarizing ten things that everyone should know about the MWC, we entertained some Influencers at this great event invited by Lenovo as well supporting the presence of other clients.
Then March arrived, which we hoped would be a quieter month. However, very soon, we got involved in organizing an appearance of our client Wonderbox in the TV show El Hormiguero, coinciding with the Father´s Day. If you think that dealing with journalists and influencers is difficult, you can´t even imagine how it is with TV stars such as Trancas y Barrancas!

With little time to recover, we went to CeBIT, the European technology fair par excellence, to accompany our clients and the Spanish journalists who attended this event.
April brought the most anticipated moment: the celebration of Canela´s 10th anniversary. Many clients, friends and partners joined us to celebrate a decade of success. We enjoyed a 48 hour break in Menorca where all the teams from all three of Canela’s office came together to relax, eat well, do outdoor yoga and visit the beautiful countryside of Menorca.

However, the best birthday present that we could ever imagine arrived a bit later… In May, we found out that Canela had achieved no less than four Sabre Awards nominations. These are the most prestigious rewards for the public relations sector and we were chosen as finalists in as well as in the category of Consultancy of the Year Iberia, the category of Best Agency to Work For and we’d been given a certificate in the category “PR Agency Marketing” and we were the finalists in the category Consumer Marketing (New Product) for the campaign Hasta la vista, barista.

With the batteries well reloaded with these recognitions, in June we went on a tour along the editorials of the main Spanish media to present them Vinted.es, a marketplace to sell, buy and trade pre-loved fashion. In just four weeks and in collaboration with some of the most influential bloggers in Spain, we achieved features in the most important media and more than 34.000 interactions in social media.
And we reached the second half of the year without imagining everything that was coming our way. In July, Freedom Pop, the free mobile phone service that is revolutionizing the sector around the world, chose Canela as their PR agency. The media coverage of the FreedomPop´s launch in Spain was amazing, with more than 138 media features and it also became a trending topic on Twitter.

After this madness, in August we took some days off. While enjoying Rio 2016 Olympic Games, we reflected on how mobile devices have changed our way of consuming news during holidays. Although we also wanted to disconnect a bit because the last quarter of the year promised to be busy.
Back to school, in September we got involved in the promotion of the Barcelona StartupWeek, an event that put back the Catalan capital on the entrepreneur map. The meeting was attended by representatives of the mainstream media and our founder, Deborah Gray, shared her vision of the 7 deadly communications sins committed by Startups.

For its part, October was a month full of events and communications actions to recover the rhythm, while we also started to prepare Black Friday and Christmas campaigns. The truth is that every time more creativity and anticipation is needed to achieve coverage in the media and, above all, to get our brands´ messages impact their target audience.
One of the achievements we are most proud of at the end of this year is that our client Lenovo has surpassed 130.000 followers on Facebook. This makes this technology company one of the brands with the most impact on social media according to TNS. Without a doubt, the hard work we have done in this area has been one of the reasons the reasons why in November Lenovo Mobile Business Group, the smartphone division of the Lenovo Group chose Canela PR to manage its communications activities, public relations and social networks in Spain. Another great challenge.
New clients and collaborators
We have tried to make an overview of the most outstanding milestones we have achieved in 2016 in Canela PR, but it is impossible to mention them all. To give you an idea of how busy we have been in the last twelve months, just to add that we have incorporated as new clients Privalore, Kyero, Chemence Graphics, wePresent, Yuneec, The Motion, AOL, MisFit, BonMignon, azimo, Chin Up, Oldenburger… And so on up to 20 new accounts! This has allowed us to expand the team by incorporating professionals in all of the 3 offices. We also have the pleasure of welcoming back Eva Calo as an Account Director in Madrid.
More clients, more Canelones, more recognitions and more successful campaigns… And of course, we can say that 2016 has been an unforgettable year. So we´re going to close the last remaining issues before Christmas holidays to give us a small break and think about everything we are going to do in 2017. Follow us and keep reading our blog. The best is yet to come!
On behalf of Canela PR, we wish you a Merry Christmas and thank you for following us.
