The “Getting to know” series is back, one of our favourite sections in which we share memories, ideas, experiences and anecdotes about this crazy world of communication. Today it’s the turn of Rocío Alcocer, one of the founders of TAPP Water, a company that designs affordable, comfortable and sustainable filtering solutions for tap water.
Getting to know Rocío Alcocer
What do you think has been your best time / achievement in the communication’s world?
The launch of our crowdfunding campaign for TAPP 2, the first water filter with biodegradable cartridges. It was a huge challenge and the coordination of creating relevant content and visibility for the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain, among other countries. In the end, we did something right when we had orders even from Korea, Singapore or the remote Christmas Island, in Australia.
As a customer, what 3 things are the most annoying of an agency?
This question is one of them 🙂 The other two would be not having enough budget to do everything they propose and the challenge of working internationally, since each market is very different and normally you have to count with several agencies to work on a global scale.
What self-advice would you give to your 25-year-old self?
Do not meditate so much on every small decision you make, focus on what is important, what is really going to have a long-term impact.
What is your frustrated profession?
When I was little I wanted to be a firefighter. In the end it has not been so “frustrated” because I spend the day putting out fires, although they are of another type than I had imagined… If not, I miss a job that allows me to spend more time in the open air: agricultural engineer, veterinary…
What social network do you think will be still popular in 2020?
Probably the most popular will be one that is not yet invented. Although Instagram is doing very well.
What challenges will communication face in the coming years?
I can think of many, although I’m not in the sector and I do not know it from the inside, but I think there are some interesting years ahead for the world of communication because of the following:
– The power of influencers, who increasingly have more weight than many of the major media which the industry was used to deal with.
– The decrease in the attention capacity of users. There is such a large amount of information on the web that it’s getting more difficult to create content that people want to consume for more than a few seconds.
– The omnichannel and be able to adapt the content to all formats and channels depending on the device, the type of audience and the moment of interaction.
What is the motto that always accompanies you?
“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to.” It is from Terri Swearingen, an American nurse who in 1997 won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her environmental activism. I like it because it helps me to think about the different actions that we can carry out on a day-to-day basis to have a positive impact on the environment, and it reminds me that it is up to everyone to change things.
