As we have been telling you in this Blog for some time now, Lisbon is the place to be. In Canela Portugal we could not ignore the fact that this weekend we will be inundated with visitors for the next great event that is taking place in our city, the Eurovision song contest 2018. Portugal is the host country and has direct access to the final where we will participate with the song “O Jardim”, interpreted by Claudia Pascoal and Isaura.
ALL ABOARD – Lisbon is the stage of Eurovision 2018
Thanks to the victory of Salvador Sobral in Kiev last year, Portugal will be hosting the 63rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. There are 43 countries which will be competing for first place, but only 26 will go on stage in the final on Saturday 12th May, at the Altice Arena in Lisbon. According to the Observer, it is estimated that the event will receive 100,000 spectators, and that about 200 million people around the world will see the three shows broadcasted by RTP. Putting the spotlight on our beloved Capital.
Portugal made its debut in the festival in 1964, but has never won until last year with Salvador Sobral’s song, unlike Spain, our neighbours, who have two victories under their belt in 1968 with Massiel and in 1969 with Salomé. Since the first edition of the contest, 49 Portuguese songs have come to the stage, ten of which reached the top ten. Songs that many of us have do not remember, but our parents won’t forget: “Menina do alto da serra”, played by Tonicha, “Sobe, sobe, balão sobe”, by Manuela Bravo and a more recent one, “Lusitana Paixão”, by Dulce Pontes.
This weekend we will be hosting 1,000 people among the delegations, 900 people in production and 70,000 people among journalists and fans. And not to mention the 11 km of cables from the 30 cameras that will ensure that everyone sees the festival!
We hope you enjoy it as much as we’re planning to.
